Head of the Security Service of Ukraine: Donbas rebels are funded by Victor Yanukovych and Kurchenko

Head of the SSU Valentyn Nalyvaychenko is confident that rebels in the east of Ukraine obtain money from former government officials and businessmen, who have fled to Russia.

"Today's sources of terrorist financing in Donbas region are, first of all, those who have fled and now live in Moscow, namely the ex-president (Victor Yanukovych) himself and his entourage, as well as some businessmen, in particular Kurchenko," Nalyvaychenko said in an interview with "Channel 5".

The head of the SSU also mentioned that the main suspect in the murder of Maidan activists is Oleksandr Yakymenko, who used to be at the head of the SSU before Yanukovych fled from Ukraine.

Militants fired near the Donetsk airport and close to the town of Schastya; 2 civilians wounded

Rebels fired six times at positions of ATO forces with small arms, the ATO press centre reports.

"The truce was observed at the day time. But there were a number of provocations from the rebel positions at night near the settlements of Schastya, Pisky, Mayorsk, Chernukhine, and near the Donetsk airport," the press centre informed on the morning of December 12.

"We received information on two people wounded during the day", the headquarters added.

Gerashchenko: Two fighters of the Azov battalion die near Mariupol

Two National Guard soldiers of the Azov battalion have died fighting against terrorists near Mariupol. Also, there are reportedly three more casualties, of whom two people severely wounded and one winged, Advisor to the Minister of Internal Affairs Anton Gerashchenko wrote on his Facebook wall.

NATIONAL SECURITY AND DEFENSE COUNCIL: Ceasefire coming into effect in Donbas

NATIONAL SECURITY AND DEFENSE council has claimed ceasefire is gradually coming into effect in the ATO area, a spokesman for the Ukrainian National Security and Defence Council, Andriy Lysenko, said at a briefing.

No strikes with heavy armaments, artillery and Grad volley fire systems were registered yesterday", Lysenko said.

"Still, rebels are taking mobilization and organizational measures in order to create a unified command similar to that of the Russian Federation.

He also noted that information concerning the death of two Azov fighters near Mariupol, which was made public by MP Anton Gerashchenko earlier today, was being verified at that moment.

He confirmed the information on a number of violations of the ceasefire agreement.

Rebel attacks with small arms were detected near the village of Mayorsk on the outskirts of Gorlivka, near the village of Pisky and not far from Schastya.

"Our military deployed at the Donetsk airport have been provoked twice today by rebels firing at them with rifle-attached grenade launchers", Lysenko said.

Poltorak requests for the Ministry of Defence a budget three times bigger than last year

The Ukrainian Defence Ministry has proposed that its budget for 2015 should be UAH 50 billion, Defence Minister Stepan Poltorak has said.

"Last year's budget was 15 billion [Hryvnias] and 11 billion [Hryvnias] from the reserve fund. The guaranteed budget for next year is 50 billion [Hryvnias] - that is what the Defence Ministry proposes," he said during his speech at the Verkhovna Rada on Friday.

He stated that it was planned to create new units, subunits and special operations forces, as well as operational commands to control the Armed Forces on a territorial basis.

It is proposed to allocate UAH 401 million for the modernization of military equipment and weapons, and UAH 6.45 billion for their purchase (including UAH 5.716 billion for supplies from domestic defence companies and UAH 1.74 billion for the purchase of imported military equipment).

"These [budget] costs are based on the fact that the strength of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has increased. Last year we had 130,000 servicemen, and now their number is 232,000. It is planned to increase the strength of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to 250,000 people," Poltorak said.
