Dzobak Volodymyr Dzobak Volodymyr

UN Security Council condemns the shell strike near Volnovakha despite pressure from Russians

The UN Security Council has strongly condemned horrific rebel attacks on a bus near the town of Volnovakha, which claimed the lives of innocent civilians.

In this regard, the Council expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and laid the stress on the need of "an impartial investigation and legal prosecution of the guilty for this action".

In a statement, they also laid the stress on the need for strict observance of Minsk treaty provisions agreed on September 5 and 19 last year.

As reported earlier, rebels shelled a roadblock of Ukrainian military on January 13 at 14:25 near the settlement of Volnovakha. One of the shells went off near a passenger bus carrying local residents. As a result, ten civilians died on the scene. It was announced later that two more people (a man and a woman) died of their wounds later that day. Thus, the civilian death toll has already reached 12 people.

Over 15 wounded residents remain in hospital.

ATO Headquarters: The situation in the ATO area is stable; 75 shell strikes in the past 24 hours

The ATO press-centre reports that the situation in the conflict zone has stabilized and the number, as well as intensity of shell strikes is decreasing.

The most troublesome locations are the Donetsk airport and adjacent settlements. Rebels carried out several attacks on the weather-tower of the airport at 11 o'clock a.m. and fired then at army positions situated around the airport.

They also mortared and shelled Ukrainian strongholds near the settlements of Staromykhailivka, Taranchuk, Arkhangelske, Tonenke, Maloorlivka, Leninske and Schastya (Lugansk region).

The settlements of Tonenke, Maryinka, Pisky and Olenivka were under artillery fire.

On the evening of January 13, rebels used 220-millimetre thermobaric rocket flamethrower systems TOS-1 "Pinocchio" for the first time since the beginning of the armed conflict to fire on the outskirts of Vesele.

"In total, rebel armed formations carried out 75 attacks on army positions in the past 24 hours," the ATO press centre said.

Terrorists shell Schastya: The town itself and neighbouring villages remain cut off from gas supplies

Terrorists shelled the town of Schastya (Lugansk region) this night. As a result, the town and neighbouring villages were cut off from gas supplies, Chairman of the Lugansk Regional State Administration Gennady Moskal reported on his webpage on Wednesday.

"PRL rebels carried out saturation attacks on the town of Schastya on Wednesday about one o'clock a.m. As a result, a pipeline of high pressure was damaged," he said.

Militants shell the town of Avdiivka; shells hit a school

Militants have fired upon the town of Avdiivka; shells have hit the building of a school, Head of the Donetsk regional police department Vyacheslav Agroskin reports.

"The educational process at all Avdiyivka schools had to be suspended," he added.

1 soldier killed, 17 wounded in the ATO area in the past 24 hours

1 service member was killed and 17 others were wounded in the ATO area in the past 24 hours, a spokesman for the Ukrainian National Security and Defence Council, Andriy Lysenko, reported at a briefing on Wednesday.

"In total, we lost 1 serviceman in the past 24 hours, and 17 others sustained wounds," Lysenko said.

According to him, the situation in the ATO area remains tense, but there are reports on a decrease in number and intensity of shell strikes.
