UN: at least 1129 civilians have been killed during the ATO in Ukraine
At least 1129 civilians were killed, and 3442 others wounded from the beginning of the ATO (mid-April) to July 26 in Ukraine, Interfax-Ukraine Online announced with reference to the fourth monthly report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in the country.
Based on the most reliable data available, the monitoring mission on human rights and the World Health Organization believe that the number of casualties in the period from mid-April to 15 July constitutes at least one thousand people. As of July 26, at least 1129 people were killed and 3442 others wounded, reads the report submitted on Monday.
It covers the period from 8 June to 15 July 2014. At the same time, the High Commissioner Office underlined that the real number of the dead would be difficult to calculate.
According to the press office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the report shows that armed people in the eastern part of Ukraine continue to kidnap, hold in custody, torture and execute individuals that are held as hostages in order to intimidate and exercise their authority over people using flagrant and brutal methods.
NATIONAL SECURITY AND DEFENSE COUNCIL: Militants have not allowed taking children away from the ATO area
The militants have categorically refused to allow 135 orphans to be taken away from the ATO area and continue to keep them as hostages, Spokesman for Ukrainian National Security and Defence Council Andriy Lysenko reported at a briefing.
Terrorists continue to keep 135 children as hostages from both Donetsk and regional children’s homes, as well as from Makiyivka children's home called Malyatko, where HIV-positive children are looked after, he said.
Militants categorically refused to allow those children to be taken away from the ATO area and are still using them as a human shield.
