Dzobak Volodymyr Dzobak Volodymyr

Pentagon: Europe faces terrorism threats and aggression from Russia

For the first time in a "very long time," the United States and its allies are facing the "very distinct threats" of a conventional state threat from Russia, Dempsey said, and the unconventional threat of terrorism from extremists.

"Where Italy sits, strategically, you're faced with the reality of dealing with both of those threats, as we are; I think that draws us closer together," he said.

There is concern, both sides noted, that foreign fighters could be moving through Italy's and NATO's southern flanks. Close to 170,000 refugees have come through Italy's shores in the past year.

Dempsey said the approach in dealing with extremism should consider the swath of countries from the Middle East to Africa, where ISIL and other terrorist groups operate.

"Looking at it one country at a time is not the answer," he said, noting he and other allies will discuss the issue Wednesday and Thursday in NATO meetings in Brussels.

He said Russian aggression will also be a topic in the NATO talks.

ATO Headquarters: Rebels employ scorched-earth tactics

Rebels carried out 102 attacks in Donbas within the past 24 hours. They have shelled army positions and adjacent territories 49 times since 6.00 Monday, the ATO press centre reported on the morning of January 20.

"The settlement of Krymske and all adjacent territories (Lugansk region) were attacked four times with Grad systems and twice with mortars,” a report reads.

"Rebels used multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) to carry out three shell strikes on the settlements of Verkhnya Olkhivka, Nyzhnye, Tryokhizbenka, Stanyza Luganska, Donetskiy, Geyivka, Pervomayske and Pisky. They also used tanks near the town of Schastya," ATO press centre reports.

Mercenaries used mortars, artillery and grenade launchers to carry out three attacks on Stanyza Luganska, Sanzharivka, Myronivskiy, and two attacks on Smile and Novogorodske.

Additionally, ATO positions near the settlements of Schastya, Tryokhizbenka, Maryinka, Krasnogorivka, Tonenke and other inhabited settlements were assaulted.

In total, 10 shell strikes directly on inhabited settlements were registered across the territory of Lugansk region. Terrorists continue to use scorched-earth tactics. Their main goal is to destroy infrastructure and murder people", ATO press centre claims.

Headquarters about the airport: Our armed forces control facilities they previously recaptured

Fighting continues in the area of the Donetsk airport, but Ukrainian military still have control over facilities that were recaptured previously, the ATO press centre reported on the morning of January 20.

"Illegal armed formations continue to attack front-line positions of Ukrainian troops in the Donetsk airport near the settlements of Pisky, Avdiivka and Tonenke," a statement reads.

Insurgents are shelling the town of Avdiyivka; multi-storey residential buildings have been damaged; at least one woman has reportedly been wounded, Head of Chief Department of Internal Affairs Vyacheslav Abroskin wrote in Facebook about 10.00 on the morning of January 20.

"An operation and investigation group of the Avdiivka District Police Department is working on the scene,” Abroskin added.

Lysenko: No deaths reported in the past 24 hours; 19 people wounded

No service man was killed in the past 24 hours of the anti-terrorist operation, a spokesman for Ukrainian National Security and Defence Council, Andriy Lysenko, reported at a briefing.

According to him, rebels and Russian regular troops are trying to carry out local offensive operations. Strikes on army positions and inhabited settlements are very intense; rebels use mortars, artillery, tanks and Grad systems.
