UN report: Over 6 thousand people died in the ATO area

The number of people who died in the east of Ukraine from mid-April 2014 till February 28, 2015 has exceeded 6000 according to rough estimates, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al-Hussein announced  on Monday.

5809 people were reported dead and 14,740 others wounded during this period. The number of dead has roughly been assessed at over 6000 given that no full reports have been presented so far especially on casualties near the Donetsk airport.

The report says that kidnapping and torturing in the ATO area are mainly done by militants, although there have been some reports about such actions conducted by Ukrainian law enforcement units.

Also, the document mentions systematic violations of human rights in the Crimea, mainly pertaining to the Crimean Tatars and those who did not support the so-called "referendum" in March.

Donbas rebels continue to bombard Ukrainian positions with "withdrawn weapons"

Donbas rebels continue to violate the Minsk ceasefire agreements by shelling positions of Ukrainian troops and civilian targets, the head of the Information Resistance Group, Dmytro Tymchuk, reports.

According to him, insurgents actively use heavy artillery and infantry weapons. Rebels and Russian mercenaries carry out attacks on forward positions of Ukrainian troops in some areas.

"The main enemy's activity was recorded in the Donetsk direction.

In particular, positions of Ukrainian troops near Avdiyivka were attacked with artillery and heavy infantry weapons in the past 24 hours. Army positions near the settlements of Krasnogorivka, Opytne, and Tonenke were also shelled.

Rebels used 120 mm mortars twice within the past 24 hours in an attempt to cause fire damages to divisions of Ukrainian troops near Debaltseve (Svetlodarsk, Popasna, and Troitske).

In addition, terrorists continue to strike out at our troops near the settlements of Shyrokine, Oktyabr, and Zaichenko.

Rebels reported earlier that they had allegedly withdrawn heavy armaments from the front line.

Insurgents continue to deliver ammunition and artillery

Militants continue to mass their equipment and improve their defensive capacity, the head of the Information Resistance Group, Dmytro Tymchuk, reports.

According to him, rebel troops (including 6 tanks, 11 ACVs, 6 MLRSs) were spotted moving from Yenakiyevo district toward Yasynuvata.

Also, two convoys (with 12 tented army trucks in the first, and 26 vehicles in the second one including MT-LB and BTS-4 tractor trucks, as well as engineer equipment) went in the direction of Donetsk through Snizhne and Shakhtarsk.

40 vehicles were spotted moving toward the area of Alchevsk-Stakhanov-Pervomaysk in the past 24 hours. These convoys mainly deliver artillery ammunition for rebel artillery detachments stationed in the area of Bryanka and Stakhanov.

Rebel tactical forces including 550-600 Russian mercenaries and soldiers, up to 20 tanks, 33 ACVs, 28 cannons, and 16 MLRs continue to mass near Novoazovsk in Prymorsky district, and to the north of this settlement.

The enemy continues to improve its defence in the area to the south of the Mariupol highway, near Sakhanka: rebels establish checkpoints there and carry out a number of other activities. 

In addition, terrorists continue to strike out at our troops near the settlements of Shyrokine, Oktyabr, and Zaichenko.

Rebels attacked ATO forces 32 times in the 24 hours with "withdrawn" artillery

Insurgents fired upon ATO forces 32 times in the past 24 hours, Acting Head of Headquarters’' Press-Centre Vladislav Selezniov reported at a briefing.

"32 attack on ATO forces and government-held settlements were carried out by illegal paramilitary in the past 24 hours,” Selezniov informed.

In turn, an ATO spokesman, Anatoliy Stelmakh, said that rebels attacked 14 times with artillery and mortars, and 27 times with small arms and grenade launchers.

"Rebels unsuccessfully tried to storm positions of ATO forces in the settlements of Avdiivka and Luganske near Debaltseve," he said.

Stelmakh also said that the enemy carried out 4 attacks on ATO forces near Donetsk overnight.

As reported earlier, rebels claimed that they had allegedly drawn off heavy armaments from the front line.

For example, it says in a report released by the so-called PRD "Ministry of Defence” that the last artillery group consisting of 6 Grad MLRSs was withdrawn from the front line on March 1; in total, they reportedly drew off 26 artillery groups.

Poroshenko enacts a resolution of the NSDC about peacekeepers

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has enacted an appeal to the United Nations and the European Union made by the NSDC on February 18, regarding deploying a peacekeeping mission in eastern Ukraine.

Poroshenko signed corresponding decree No. 116/2015 on Monday, March 2, the press service reports. The decree came into force on the date of its announcement.

1 soldier killed, and 4 others wounded in the past 24 hours in the ATO area

1 military was killed, and 4 others wounded in the area of the anti-terrorist operation in the past 24 hours, a spokesman for the Ukrainian National Security and Defence Council, MP Andriy Lysenko, reported at a briefing.

The tensest situation in the ATO area was detected near the settlement of Avdiyivka and the village of Pisky.

Additionally, Illegal paramilitaries shelled army positions and made attempts to attack strongholds of ATO forces near the village of Luganske in Artemivsk district, Donetsk region. All attacks were repelled.
